Celebrating Volunteer Appreciation Month

April invites us to pause and recognize something truly powerful: the impact of people who choose to give their time, their energy, and their hearts. Volunteer Appreciation Month is more than a moment on the calendar—it’s a chance to honor the individuals whose generosity strengthens our communities and keeps our mission moving forward.

As a life-long volunteer myself, I find that volunteering connects me to causes I care about in meaningful ways. I’m not just filling a role; I’m expanding the organization’s capacity, giving them room to dream bigger, and often become part of the institutional memory that keeps things steady through transitions.

Volunteering is, at its core, an act of hope. It’s a quiet promise to show up for others, often without recognition, simply because it matters. And when that commitment continues year after year, it becomes a legacy.

Rise volunteers embody that legacy in extraordinary ways. Today, we are proud to celebrate:

  • 538 active volunteers; 338 of these volunteers have served for five or more years, including:
    • 156 serving 5–9 years
    • 137 serving 10–14 years
    • 45 serving 15–20 years
    • And three remarkable volunteers who have reached 20 years of service:
Mary Toneff, Barbara Harris, and Rita Dickinson

These individuals have not only given their time—they have built and sustained communities.

  • Mary has led the OH, Sylvania‑1 chapter with dedication and heart.
  • Barbara has guided the IL, Bloomingdale‑1 chapter since its inception.
  • Rita has done the same for the AZ, Phoenix‑1 chapter, shaping it from day one.

Their leadership is a testament to what long-term commitment can achieve.

To every Rise volunteer: thank you for the compassion you bring, the trust you build, and the countless ways you make a difference. Your service changes lives in ways that may never be fully visible, but its impact is lasting and deeply appreciated.

Rise is stronger because of you—your steadiness, your kindness, and your willingness to keep saying “yes” to helping others. This month, and every month, we celebrate you!

With Gratitude,
Beverley Francis-Gibson, CEO
