Gender-based violence (GBV) Source: UN WOMEN is a global pandemic that affects 1 in 3 women in their lifetime. It includes physical, sexual, psychological, and economic abuse, and is rooted in gender inequalities, harmful cultural practices, and power imbalances.

Common forms of GBV in the Global South include:

  • domestic and intimate partner violence
  • female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM)
  • child/forced marriage
  • trafficking
  • rape, abduction, and exploitation as a weapon of war

More than 230 million girls and women Source: UN WOMEN worldwide have been subjected to FGM/C – an extreme form of discrimination and human rights violation.

12 million girls Source: GirlsNotBrides under the age of 18 are married off every year.

When a girl undergoes FGM or child marriage, their childhood is essentially over.

GBV has severe and far-reaching impacts on women and girls. Survivors experience trauma, unwanted pregnancies, and sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. Girls who experience violence are more likely to drop out of school, reducing their future economic independence. GBV perpetuates cycles of inequality and poverty.
