Healthy women and girls are the building blocks of a stable, productive society. Yet, deep-rooted gender inequality undermines the health and wellbeing of women in the Global South who experience high rates of:

  • maternal and newborn mortality rates
  • HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases
  • cervical cancer
  • gender-based violence
  • sexual and reproductive health issues
  • mental health issues

Maternal mortality rates in low-income countries are nearly 40 times higher than Source: World Health Organization in high-income countries.

HIV prevalence among adolescent girls and young women living in sub-Saharan Africa is three times higher Source: UNICEF than among adolescent boys and young men.

These challenges are exacerbated by the lack of access to timely, quality and affordable healthcare and resources – especially in rural, remote areas. For example, many women lack access to prenatal care, skilled birth attendants and emergency obstetric services, resulting in high rates of maternal mortality and preventable health complications, including obstetric fistula.

Depression, anxiety, and trauma are common, especially among women facing extreme poverty, conflict and displacement, and gender-based violence, but mental health services are often unavailable, underfunded, or stigmatized.

How Together Women Rise Helps Women
Get the Healthcare They Need

We have helped build sustainable, accessible health systems to reach marginalized women and girls in some of the most remote regions in the world. We have funded the training of female healthcare professionals, including nurses, midwives, and Community Health Workers. We have partnered with many organizations who provide sexual and reproductive health education and services, including family planning and contraception.
