April 2015 trip to the DR includes a service component

Our trip to the Dominican Republic (DR) in April of 2015 will give you the opportunity to connect face-to-face with the girls we have supported through Mariposa. The experiences will deepen your understanding of the issues faced by women and girls in the DR , and foster strong bonds of friendship with the other travelers in our group.

This trip includes a service component, and we will be working with the girls served by Mariposa for at least four of the days we are there.

Although this trip is open to all involved with DFW, it’s not the kind of trip for everyone. It’s not for those expecting all the comforts of home or a 5-star hotel. Our accommodations will be simple (although right on the beach). The food we will be eating may be different than what you normally have, and may not give many options for those on a very strict diet (vegetarians welcome). It may be quite hot. We may encounter weird bugs, potential pickpockets, children begging, and heart-wrenching poverty.

The attitude of our travelers is paramount. You need to be able to roll with whatever happens, as our itinerary could change. Flexibility is a must. You need to be in good health so you can manage (and enjoy) working in hot weather. You need to possess a spirit of adventure and be willing to help in the service program with what is requested of you. You need to get along well with others, and be willing to fully participate in this unique and special service/learning experience.

And also, if chosen, you need to be prepared to go on this trip both financially and on a time-commitment level. You will be away from work and home for 8-9 days, and will need a total budget of approximately $3500 for all things related to this adventure (including international airfare and other extraneous costs). We’ll also be asking you to sign a release to ensure that you have no known health conditions/history that could be problematic on the trip.
