Virginia Chapter Celebrates 10 Years
Congratulations to the VA, Herndon-1 chapter, led by Sheila Hanz, on 10 years together! The group started when Sheila was told about DFW by a friend in Maryland.
“I loved the concept of making a difference in the lives of women and girls,” she said. “I had recently retired and wanted to get involved in giving to others.”
Sheila founded the chapter with Mary Thompson and has continued on her own as its leader. There are about 16 members in the group, with 8 – 12 in attendance each month.
“Our chapter has a wonderful group of women who enjoy learning about other cultures and want to share their resources with other women and girls,” Sheila said. “We care for each other and enjoy sharing traveling adventures and grandchildren stories.”
Sheila said the key to longevity as a chapter is to have fun and be flexible. Members take turns hosting each month. They begin their meetings with socializing, wine and appetizers, followed by sharing information about the featured grantee and then enjoying dinner. And they are very faithful to their monthly commitment.
“In the 10 years that we have been meeting, we have only missed six meetings, and one was because of a hurricane,” Sheila said.
