Program Title: Maternal and Child Health Incentives Program

Program Summary: Funding will be used to support the Mother and Child Health Incentives program and the  program staff.  The program is a conditional, in-kind transfer program provided for free to mothers in Kibera, and is aimed to counteract the high child morbidity and mortality rates by encouraging mothers to seek regular prenatal, postnatal, and child welfare services to ensure positive health outcomes for themselves and their children.

Program Objectives: The program expects to see an increase in patients receiving post-natal care, increase in mothers receiving post natal and child welfare care.  Long-term expectations include a reduction in infant and maternal mortality and a decrease in the number of children with developmental challenges.

Grant pays for: 

• Conditional In-kind Incentive expenses – Each item listed will be given to mothers and/or their children when they have met the milestones specified.
• Salaries for clinic staff

Why we love this project: This program addresses the needs of mothers and children between the ages of 0-5.  By emphasizing the health and well being of this population, this program seeks to reduce incidence of childhood morbidity and mortality, increase immunization rates and keep a close watch on children’s progress towards developmental milestones during this very critical period.  This ensures a smooth transition for these children to preschool; and elementary school and onwards.

Summary
Dining for Women's donations will combat poverty in the Kibera slum area by supporting (1) the Kibera School for Girls and (2) the Women's Income-Generating Empowerment Project, an initiative that combines income-generating projects with desperately needed community services.
