While many might think there is nothing to do in this post-election period, our Together Women Rise advocates are stepping up their advocacy in order to get legislation onto the President’s desk for signature before the end of the year. In particular, we are still reaching out to Senate and House offices for their co-sponsorship of the End TB Now Act and the READ Act Reauthorization. We cannot afford to let another year pass without ensuring that money allocated during the appropriations process is spent in the most effective manner. It is essential that we reverse course on TB and girls education to make up for horrible losses in progress due to COVID-19.
In October we celebrated the passage of the Global Malnutrition Prevention and Treatment Act of 2021 (H.R.4693), which will bring the “power of four” to the global communities we support. The “power of four” includes providing prenatal vitamins, exclusive breastfeeding support, vitamin A supplementation for young kids, and emergency therapeutic foods to treat life-threatening severe malnutrition. In view of the worsening statistics around malnutrition, the provisions in this act are essential and the timing is critical.
We are contacting our legislators about both the tuberculosis and the education bills. Would you join us and take a brief action here toward ending TB? The more our members of Congress hear from constituents, the more likely they are to support this legislation. Our power together can be formidable. You can learn more and watch our last webinar here.
Our next advocacy webinar will be Tuesday, December 13 at 8:30 pm ET/5:30 pm PT. Sign up here.
We are also planning another Advocacy Orientation sometime early next year. We’ll announce it in The Dish and on the Upcoming Events page of our website. These activities are yet another way to get us closer to achieving global gender equality.
Happy Holidays and hope to see you in the new year!
