El Salvador 2012 trip diary: Day One

sisters

After months of correspondence and anticipation I finally got to meet our team outside the San Salvadorian airport in a humid 84 degrees. Although we came from all corners of the US, we speak DFW and instantly connected as sisters!!!

We started our “in country get to know you” conversation in the van and over a late lunch once we had all arrived. There is so much excitement about the adventures ahead. We are being well taken care of by CIS (The Center for Exchange and Solidarity, our in-country organization) and our trip leader, Taryn Walker. We have a full week of connecting with local women’s groups and exploring the beauty of El Salvador.

After our meal we met with our host families, and in pairs were off to our new homes for the week. My roommate Patricia from NJ and I are staying with Dina and her daughter. First thing, a snack of Papusas, a local treat, and hot chocolate — yummy!! Then a short walk with the dogs and to bed for some much-needed sleep to refresh from a full day of travels. Adios…
